The Mind and Will of The Lord Series

Know what the Lord had His prophets tell the Saints since the Doctrine and Covenants.

Outside the Standard Works, no assemblage of words better expresses the mind and will of the Lord than those spoken by the prophet of God. The Mind and Will of the Lord Series is a compilation of messages given by the Prophets of God since the modern restoration of the Church. There is nothing like them in print.

Wilford Woodroff / Lorenzo Snow

  • Jesus Christ will come to the Saints in the Rocky Mountains.
  • Law of adoption revealed to Woodruff.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Wilford Woodruff was an incredibly interesting prophet. His tenure was filled with revelation. Other than Joseph Smith no other President of the Church had more published revelations. He spoke of the time when Joseph Smith was “transformed before us” and glowed as amber because the spirit was so strongly manifested within him. He also cited his prophecy in 1833 that the Saints would eventually settle in the Rocky Mountains.

President Woodruff even revealed that on that “great and dreadful day of the Lord” the Savior will descend in the Rocky Mountains. He spoke of visits to him from the Spirit World of Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and of visits from the Founding Fathers, the latter requesting that their temple work be done for them.Probably no other president emphasized the redemption of the dead more than he. He was the prophet who received the revelation from God ending the solemnization of plural marriages by the Church. He spoke of casting out evil spirits when opening new missions and of his many near encounters with death. His experience of raising his own wife from the dead is also a part of this book.

Both he and his successor President Lorenzo Snow served as a type of bond to the past. Woodruff’s talks were filled with references to his wonderment about his longevity. He was in Kirtland, participated in Zion’s Camp, was driven out of Far West, Missouri, and Nauvoo, Illinois, endured the harsh elements at Winter Quarters, crossed the plains, and drove the very-ill Brigham Young into the Valley after Young’s prophetic utterance that “This is the place.” The initial founders of the Church were long since dead. A couple of generations had arisen that never knew the Prophet Joseph Smith. They personalized him for them. Woodruff and Snow were the last of the apostles to actually know the Prophet Joseph. Their first person testimonies enabled others to carry him within their hearts deep into the twentieth century.

He had three especially powerful witnesses to this, the first when a young man of 22, and the third when the Savior himself visited him in the Salt Lake Temple just prior to his becoming president of the Church, which visit is also a part of this book.

Outside of this personal witness his restoration of the importance of the law of tithing was his major contribution in his three-and-one-half-year tenure as president. This ultimately rescued the Church from financial bondage. His divine revelation on this matter in Saint George is part of established church folklore.

Know what the Lord had Wilford Woodruff and Lorenzo Snow tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•Return of the Lost Ten Tribes described.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
The Prophet Joseph Smith was the single most important voice on earth since New Testament times. John Taylor, who survived the assassination of Joseph and Hyrum, was inspired to say "Joseph Smith...has done more save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it." Every word preserved of his life and teachings is important, of which this book is a major contribution.

Be with the prophet as he organizes the Church in its first General Conference then leads his group of followers through four states in the fourteen years as its first president. Witness the unleashing of all Hell upon him and his followers. Watch as he struggles against insurmountable odds to build two temples and breaks ground for a third. Attend General Conference with him as angels make known their presence in the Kirtland Temple. Also included as a part of General Conference was the review of the Nauvoo Legion and the firing of cannon just prior to the laying of the Nauvoo Temple cornerstone. Subsequent conferences were then held in the unfinished temple or on the grounds thereof.

Walk with the prophet as he goes door to door healing the sick in Montrose very similar to when the Savior did the same thing in His day. Experience the "peculiar" clearness and transparency in his face as the Lord gives him new revelations. Of special interest in this volume are four revelations not found in the Doctrine and Covenants--three of which were lost for over a century. No LDS home should be without this valuable book.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
On January 23, 1970, at the age of 93, Joseph Fielding Smith was ordained and set apart as the tenth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—the oldest ever called to this office. He was called by his father to the apostleship in 1910 and served for 60 years—longer than any other apostle in this dispensation. His tenure as president, however, was also to be the shortest to that date as well. He died July 2, 1972, two and a half years later. No one could know that the comparatively young Harold B. Lee, who followed as president, would serve but one and a half years. Together they served four years and share space in this book because of their short tenures.

Joseph Fielding Smith had the unique distinction of being the only president of the Church born to a president of the Church and one of three presidents of the Church with the name Joseph Smith. His grandfather was Hyrum Smith, brother to the Prophet Joseph, and his great grandfather was Joseph Smith Sr. For eight years, father and son served together as prophet and apostle. One would suppose that with 25 volumes of published discourses and writings and the longevity as an apostle that his contribution to the Church would have already been accomplished. Still, his tenure as president was a vigorous one. The Ensign, New Era, and Friend were introduced, replacing the Improvement Era, Instructor, Children’s Friend, Relief Society Magazine, and other publications. New presidents were installed at Brigham Young University, Church College of Hawaii, and Ricks College; and cornerstones were laid at the Ogden and Provo Temples. Monday evenings were reserved Church-wide for family home evening, and area conferences were started (See Preface in book).

With respect to General Conference being a time of revelation President Smith made perhaps the strongest statement of any president of the Church and he did so as a part of his last conference before his death. “We are the servants of the Lord,” he told those assembled. “We have received light and truth and revelation from him. He has commanded us to proclaim His truths and live His laws. And so now, in harmony with His mind and will, and as guided by His Holy Spirit, we give counsel and direction to the Saints and to the world” (See Address14, paragraph 5 of this book).

President Harold B. Lee was ordained and set apart as the eleventh President of the Church on July7, 1972, upon the death of his predecessor as noted. He served the shortest tenure of any of his predecessors in Church history but his impact upon the Church was long remembered because of his thirty-six years of leadership especially in the welfare and correlation programs of the Church which he initiated under other presidents. Today these function throughout the world much as they were instituted by Elder Lee.

Certainly President Harold B. Lee considered Conference addresses scripture. As an apostle in 1941 he had referred to those “who sit here on the stand, as the fountainheads of truth, through whom God will reveal His will, that His Saints might be preserved through an evil day” (Harold B. Lee, Conference Report, April 1941, pp. 120-121). As President he was bolder yet when he said: “If you want to know what the Lord has for this people at the present time, I would admonish you to get and read the discourses that have been delivered at this conference, for what these brethren have spoken by the power of the Holy Ghost is the mind of the Lord, the will of the Lord, the voice of the Lord and the power of God unto salvation.” (See Lee Address 7, paragraph 2 of this book).

Shortly before his death he was attending his home ward Fast and Testimony Meeting and felt constrained to speak. “I’m sorry to disturb you, but I know that it would be disturbing to my Father in Heaven if I don’t say something to you at this time. By way of testimony I want you to know that I know that God lives, that Jesus is the Christ and our Redeemer, and he is at the head of this Church; I am not” (See book preface). Jesus Christ was and is the only head of His Church and His prophets so testify. Know what the Lord had Joseph Fielding Smith and Harold B. Lee tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•Abortion is an evil act.
•Saints are to avoid practice of birth control.
•The Birthday of Jesus Christ was April 6.
•The responsibilities of motherhood cannot be disregarded without divine displeasure.
•Worlds without number are peopled by spirit children.
•Communism is Satins’ plan to counterfeit the United Order.

Joseph F. Smith

•The proper line of authority when seeking answers to gospel questions.

•Membership in the church is greater than to be an emperor or a king.

•Card-playing strongly discouraged.

•Members of the First Presidency do not have to be ordained apostles.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
President Joseph F. Smith was one of the more interesting prophets. His place as son of the martyred Hyrum Smith and nephew of the Prophet Joseph Smith uniquely provides a hereditary link from 1820 to the 20th Century which did not end with his death in 1918 but continued through his own son, President Joseph Fielding Smith until his death in 1973—a total of 153 years. He was also the first prophet of the latter days who was born and raised in the Church and the only president to have a son become a president also.

His life transcended the time period from ox-cart to automobile to airplane, from before war with Mexico, with the single-shot rifle, to the Spanish American War to World War I and gas and aerial warfare.

He went from mail carrier communication only to Morse Code to the telephone and finally to the radio in 1906. As president, beginning in 1901, his major challenge was to improve the image of the Church which was at an all-time low largely over the ending of Church-sanctioned polygamous marriages. This he did in part by testifying before congressional committees and by converting historical spots of church history into tourist attractions and information centers. His warm personality was a definite asset. He is also remembered for his doctrinal clarifications housed in his well-known volume entitled Gospel Doctrine. Three doctrinal areas especially stand out: his denunciation of the Theory of Evolution, his warning against false revelations and his popularizing the titles Father and Son as applied to members of the Godhead. But it is his vision of Christ’s visit to the antediluvians in October 1918 which became Section 138 of the Doctrine and Covenants that is best known. He was shown how the spirits in spirit prison were taught the gospel in the three days Christ’s physical body lay in the tomb. He died a few days latter as a victim of the influenza epidemic killing over 500,000 Americans in three months. A public funeral was not held. All of these topics plus some incredible faith promoting stories make this book an essential addition to your spiritual library.

Know what the Lord had Joseph F. Smith tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•The coming forth out of the liquid grave in baptism is likeness of Christ’s resurrection from death to life.
•The proper line of authority when seeking answers to gospel questions.
•Bishops should not try to do all the work in the ward.
•Card-playing strongly discouraged.
•Permisiveness a leading factor in why our children go astray.

•Avoid debt for speculative purposes .
•Disputes should be settled without courts.
•Fasting in excess unwise.

John Taylor

  • When the Constitution is deserted by others, the elders will rally around its shattered fragments.
  • Celestial City described.
  • Those who practice abortion are seen as murderers.
Additional DescriptionMore Details
Probably only Joseph Smith faced greater opposition while leading the Church than did John Taylor. Whether as a missionary single-handedly facing a mob which promised to tar and feather him if he tried to speak to them; or in leading the Church when many of its leaders were in the penitentiary, and when the First Presidency for some time was being hunted like criminals complete with wanted posters; he stood as a rock against the storm. For two and one-half years of his ten-year presidency, conferences were not held in Salt Lake City, and President Taylor, unable to attend, fearing arrest, forwarded epistles.

Judicial tyranny raged in Utah as it had in Missouri and Illinois, yet throughout it all the loyalty of the Brethren to the Constitution, as implemented by the Founding Fathers, stood out. In fact, Canadian born President Taylor was one of the most profound literary defenders of that document in Church history. It is unlikely that readers will not notice his profound command of the English language which conveys the impression that one is dealing with one of the most highly literate prophets of this dispensation. Also, this prophet had no problem speaking at length, sometimes for over an hour, his addresses sometimes punctuated by occasional outbursts of “Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna! to God and the Lamb.” Favorite topics were the constitution and abortion.

John Taylor believed that the purpose of General Conference was “to correct whatever in doctrine or in practice is not in strict conformity with the mind and will of God….” His counselor George Q. Cannon was more blunt. He declared that theJournal of Discourses, a church publication housing the addresses of the brethren, “deservedly ranks as one of the standard works of the Church….”

Know what the Lord had John Taylor tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•Those who practice abortion are seen as murderers.
•Respecting mothers who refuse to have but one or two children.
•Saints yet to see more bloodshed, ruin, and devastation than seen in the Civil War.
•Communism to roll on until it becomes a vexation to hear the reports of.

Heber J. Grant

•Coca Cola should be avoided because it creates an appetite for itself.

•Early experience with a ouija board.

•Getting something for nothing from the government is wrong.

•President Grants first experience with television.

Additional DescriptionMore Details
Elder Heber J. Grant became president of the Church just 12 days after the close of World War I, served through the Great Depression, and died just six days after the conclusion of World War II in Europe in 1945. His influence in the Church transcends the three most critical events in the twentieth century. He helped guide the Saints through the excesses of the “Roaring Twenties,” pleading with them at that time to get out and to stay out of debt and to keep the Word of Wisdom. During the Great Depression, when 25 % of all wage earners were out of work, he advised the Saints to use their money on home production, thereby keeping the money at home so that it could profit all; and during World War II the message was to serve when called but not to hate the enemy. “In their work of destruction,” servicemen were told, “they will be striking at their brethren,” but this “will not be held against them” as they were not responsible for the conditions preparatory to the conflict (The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints Conference Reports 1942-1945, April 4, 1942, pp. 2-11).

The two messages that dominated his ministry as president were the Word of Wisdom and tithing. With respect to the former he once said: “I believe beyond the shadow of a doubt that there are hundreds and thousands of Latter-day Saints who, but for the obeying of the Word of Wisdom, would not be here today. When they have been attacked by serious diseases and have been in a critical condition physically, having obeyed that law, having fulfilled an irrevocable law of God, he was bound to bestow the promised blessing, and they have come to the afflicted ones” (Wallis, Improvement Era, Nov. 1936, p. 697). He added coca cola to the list of substances that the Saints were to avoid then followed with a general guideline for all things taken into the body, “The Lord does not want you to use any drug that creates an appetite for itself.” (See Address 20, paragraphs 6-9 of this book.) On the subject of tithing no new doctrine was offered, mostly just clarification, but no other illustration is better suited to teaching the principle than his ten apple story given in his last conference address (See Address 118, paragraphs 8-10 of this book). He died the following month having served 26 1/2 years—longer than any other president except Brigham Young. He was also the last polygamist president of the church having had three wives at one time.

He was perhaps the greatest example of endurance and persistence as well. He struggled in three areas: baseball, penmanship, and singing. His remarks permeate with his concern to excel in these areas. One can feel the struggle as he speaks to these subjects and the joy received as he conquers each area.

Know what the Lord had Heber J. Grant tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•Coca Cola should be avoided because it creates an appetite for itself.
•The Word of Wisdom was given to extend the life of man.
•Most who seek Church assistance are not honest tithe payers.

Brigham Young

  • Administering to the sick may be extended to animals.
  • How one detects an angel of light from one of darkness.
  • Overeating is one cause of disease.
  • Blood will not be a part of a resurrected body.
Additional DescriptionMore Details
Brigham Young was the single most important voice on earth during his thirty-three years as president of the Church (1844-1877). No other prophet served longer and none except Joseph Smith had a greater affect upon Church Doctrine. The Pearl of Great Price was published under his leadership. He led the Church through the exodus from Nauvoo, served as Utah’s first governor for eight years, settled the Saints in more than 200 communities from Canada to Mexico, resisted the invasion of the U.S. Army against Utah, and even endured house arrest in 1871-1872.

Certainly President Brigham Young considered his remarks to be scripture. He once declared: “I say now when they, my sermons, are copied and approved by me they are as good scripture as is couched in this Bible, and if you want to read Revelations, read the sayings of him who knows the mind of God…. I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call it scripture.”

Those reading large sections or from cover to cover will discover a very subtle sarcastic humor in the man that occasionally borders on the hilarious.

Brother Brigham, as he was called by many, had a good sense of humor. He also was very blunt and outspoken--a quality critical to establishing a “Mormon culture” in a climate of such religious diversity. Appreciation and love for the man only grows.
Know what the Lord had Brigham Young tell the Saints that is not in The Doctrine and Covenants:

•Adam came into Garden of Eden with a celestial body.
•Administering to the sick may be extended to animals.
•How one detects an angel of light from one of darkness.
